New Year Appeal 2007

New Year Appeal

A
few months ago, a young pregnant mother was rushed into one of our medical centres in the urban slums of Mafoluku, Oshodi in Lagos, Nigeria.

She was having painful contractions and was to deliver imminently. She was bleeding heavily and was dehydrated. She had no money on her.

The medical staff on duty could not determine the full details of her pregnancy and possible risks she might have been facing since she had not registered for antenatal care at the centre as commonly advised.

In fact, she had not seen a doctor or midwife throughout the pregnancy, right up until when she was rushed in.

Without wasting precious time, she was ushered quickly into the delivery room and within minutes, had received an IV drip for fluids, medication to take care of her pains and was helped to deliver her child, a tiny little girl who cried out immediately after birth, much to the joy of everyone. However, several minutes later, it became apparent that there was a second baby. Fortunately, the second twin was coming down, head first into the birth canal and the delivery of a beautiful baby boy was concluded within minutes of the arrival of his sister.

The mother and her babies are doing well and were discharged home a few days later without worry, grateful that both babies are healthy. However, more importantly, her fears of a huge delivery bill were allayed when she discovered our centres do not charge exorbitant medical fees like most other centres in the neighbourhood.

Very high user fees have been identified as the major reason why the poor and underprivileged do not access good quality healthcare. They resort to cheap alternatives which invariably lead to poor and often fatal outcomes.

Wish for Africa managed to prevent an almost tragic outcome in the case of the woman in the story above.

Our network of primary care centres set up in areas with low socio-economic indicators; create access to decent, yet affordable healthcare for people in poor communities of Africa. We do not turn them back because they are poor and unable to pay before receiving treatment.

Help us continue this work. We are asking for your support in assisting more people like this young mother.

Please donate money, medical equipment or supplies and if possible, adopt one of our medical centres.

Do contact us to discuss how we can set up a primary care centre in an African community and help members of this community have access to low-cost yet good quality healthcare.
