Ending the shortage of doctors and nurses in the world’s poorest countries got a double boost as Hilary Benn and Patricia Hewitt, Secretaries of State for International Development and Health, welcomed the publication of Lord Crisp’s review of how the UK can help health services in developing countries and announced £1 million for the Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA).
“The new funding for the international partnership, the Global Health Workforce Alliance, is another example of how we can work together to find solutions to the critical shortage of staff in developing countries.” - Pat Hewitt
WISH for Africa welcomes this report with great optimism as we have campaigned extensively towards implementing solutions to the problem of brain drain in Africa.
In December 2006 - WISH For Africa took a team of volunteers from the UK to Africa as part of our 'brain-gain' solution to the problem of migration of health professionals from the developing world, otherwise known as 'brain-drain'.
Lord Crisp's report, published Feb 13th 2007, can be viewed here.
